SELECTION of MANUFACTURING PROCESSES for OPTIMAL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES and ECONOMIC PARAMETERS
There are numerous processes used for this sort of manufacturing, selected in relation to the environment where the article is to be utilized.
Starting with the type of piece to be produced, the technology to be employed is chosen so as to obtain the best results in terms of mechanical properties and economic parameters.
WET LAYUP VACUUM BAGGING
The starting point for this method is a fabrication process known as wet layup.
It consists of manually impregnating the fibers (carbon or similar) with specific resins and waiting for the laid-up laminate to solidify inside a bag where the air is extracted by a vacuum pump.
The autoclave process is employed for the serial production of a component (see image below).
This process is similar to the one above except that the parts are cured at high pressure and temperature inside an autoclave (at around 6 bars of pressure and a temperature of 120°-150° C).
To obtain the best results in terms of weight and intrinsic mechanical properties for the component, composite fabrics known as prepregs are employed: the material is bought from the manufacturer already pre-impregnated with a thermoset resin that solidifies when the piece is cured at a preselected temperature.
This process requires a temperature-controlled oven in which the part is baked.
